TAKE CARE OF YOU FIRST

I love January because it is a time of reflection, resolutions and forgiveness. It is a brand new exciting year, and it is time to plan. Let bygones be bygones. Now is the time to take stock, and plan what to do next.  This year seems special to me because it looks a bit like our phone number: 503-445-2200.

Reflect back on the past year and think about all that has happened. Then ask yourself, “Did I respond well? Could I have done better? Did I let myself go?”

When I think of the past, the first person I think of is my mother. She passed away in 2002, yet she always stays fresh in my mind. My mom went on dialysis when she was 37 until she died at 64. When I was very young, I dutifully helped with cleaning, laundry, and cooking, typically with her close by.

I resented chores at the time, but now I realize they were a privilege.  She often said things, while I did them, that have permanently stuck in my head. Some things may sound cliché, but I worry that my sons may not know them because they often have earbuds in their ears, they get their info from YouTube and I had spared them the responsibility of chores.

My words of wisdom, and code of conduct thanks to my mom:
1. Take care of yourself first, then you will be better able to care for others.
2. Listening is more important than talking.
3. If you don’t have something nice to say, then don’t say anything at all.
4. If you are going to do something, make sure you do it right, or not at all.
5. Waste not, want not.
6. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Everyone deserves your respect.
7. Don’t judge someone without walking in their shoes first.
8. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
9. You are capable of doing _anything_ , as long as you are willing to work for it.
10. Never depend on a man.

To be fair, here are the words of wisdom from my father:
Get an education; they can never take that away from you.

Why say all that in a newsletter? Because if you look back over the past 1-2 years and realize that you haven’t been taking very good care of yourself… we want you to know that you have a safe place, a resource here with Klein Dermatology & Associates to get back on track and start taking care of yourself better. We have serious tools here, you just have to ask. I know it can be a bit overwhelming.

Avoid Lime Juice before Laser Procedures and the Sun

There is a substance in lime juice that when applied to the skin then exposed to the sun creates a rash problem we call phytophotodermatitis. In addition, if one were to ingest orally a lot of lime, and then get a laser or IPL type of treatment done afterwards – that could lead to burns. I see products on the shelves often that say they are a Coconut Lime type of thing and I always wonder why. Any dermatologist would never put lime juice or extract into a topical product like a moisturizing cream. A trip to Mexico with a little piece of lime stuck in a Corona beer often leads to a dermatology visit.

Here’s to 2022 and let’s hope its a great year!
